Is Academia the right place for me?

There comes a time in every researcher's life where we start to wonder if Academia is the right place for us. However we are often too overwhelmed with work to even pause and think what we would really like to do. And let's be real, most often than not we are still not aware of the alternative careers we can pursue and the value we can bring to a company, specially after finishing a PhD.

Tip #1 - Create a profile at myIDP platform

Start by creating a profile @ https://myidp.sciencecareers.org/

There you can:

💭 Do exercices to help you assess your skills, interests and values

📑 Get an indication of which scientific career path would suit you better

🎯 Tools for setting strategic goals

📖 Articles and Resources to guide you

After finishing these steps, this will narrow down the list of possible careers for you. Now you just need to get more information about these careers.

Tip #2 - Listen to Podcast Episodes

There are already some podcasts and even youtube episodes fully dedicated to specific career paths, you just have to look for them. This is a great way for starting to understand each possible career, but it lacks interaction. And who better than the people in your network to clarify your questions?

Tip #3 - Networking

Start by seeing if anyone from your network works or has worked in a similar position and talk to them. Ask them about their daily tasks, company culture, KPI's, etc.

you will instantly get a better picture of that role in that company. Remember that the KPI's and culture may vary a lot depending on the size of the company among other factors.
